Course aims
The course aims to:
1) Introduce students to current trends and methods for the study of performing arts history;
2) Provide students with the means to contextualise their practice and that of others within a historical framework;
3) Offer opportunity for students to understand the inter-twinning of critical and performance practices and apply this to their practice.
Learning outcomes
Students who have passed the course will be able to:
1) Discuss key-figures and issues within the history of performing arts;
2) Examine connections between works and their makers within a wider context, taking into account the particular socio-political sphere in which they happened;
3) Apply historiographic methodologies and differentiate between primary and secondary sources and their application to historical research;
4) Demonstrate ability to engage critically with historical research to underpin their creative practice;
5) Analyse performance practice (including their own) within a larger socio-political context.
