Course aims

The aim of the createive work is to develop musicians of high professional standard, enhance skills in the area of specialization, provide experience and prepare the student for independent artistic career both in Estonia and internationally, support creative personality, a broad outlook, and understanding of wider artistic and social issues.


Learning outcomes

Doctoral students in music:
Giving a public performance of a programme not less than 60 minutes in length. The supervisor of the doctoral student shall make sure that the difficulty level of the performed works meets the standard of doctoral studies.
For Vocalists, the creative work is a solo concert, an important opera role or a performance of a large-scale vocal-instrumental work.
For Instrumentalists, the creative work is a solo concert or a concert of ensemble music, depending on the doctoral student’s research topic.
For those majoring in Composition, the creative work is an original piece of music not less than 35 minutes in length.
The Doctoral Council may also accept a recording as creative work as long as it is made during the doctoral student’s public performance or released by a recognised publisher (in the fields of music and dramatic arts: one recording; in the field of composition: up to two recordings; in the case of multimedia compositions, film music and other justified special cases: up to three recordings).
Doctoral students in the Dramatic Arts:
The creative work is a stage production, an important role in a theatre, film, radio or television production, or an extensive creative project in another form depending on the doctoral student’s area of specialisation.
Doctoral concerts and other presentations of creative works are public (announced in media, on the web page of the Academy and on poster stands). They can be organised by the EAMT Concert and Performance Centre or some other organisation. Concerts and other presentations of creative works take place in Tallinn, or alternatively elsewhere with the permission of the Doctoral Council.
Doctoral students shall sign up for a doctoral concert or other presentation of creative work with the Secretary of the Doctoral Council at least two months before the event by submitting a pro forma application coordinated with their supervisor, as well as the programme of the performance. The task of the supervisor is to make sure that the programme of the doctoral concert meets the requirements set for doctoral concerts. Doctoral students shall submit to the Secretary of the Doctoral Council a written presentation of the concert programme or creative project (minimum of 3,000 characters) no later than one month before the presentation of the creative work
