Course aims

The aim of the doctoral thesis and the seminar supporting its completion, is to provide young researchers with a full-scale scientific work/research experience through the examination of an important musicological problem, and also offer them an experience of formatting an extensive written work by writing a monograph (or a series of articles). The aim of writing a dissertation is to refine knowledge and skills needed for research in musicology and the creation of new knowledge.


Learning outcomes

Musicologists who have defended their dissertation and earned a doctoral degree:
1. Are able to originate, plan, conduct and critically evaluate research, able to convey new knowledge and innovative procedural solutions.
2. Are able to present both verbally and in written form, the issues, conclusions and their underying theoretical foundations of musicology in general, as well as those pertaining to the area of specialization, to the audience of specialists or non-professionals, in the native language and foreign languages relevant for the given field.
3. Have published research papers in musicological journals, symposia proceedings etc.
4. Determine the need for obtaining new knowledge and skills, and develop them; transmit competence and professionality to other students, colleagues, and society in general.
5. Teach, instruct and supervise.
6. Are able to work independently in complex (and international) work and study environments and conduct research that requires management and teamwork skills, innovative thinking and the ability to make strategic decisions.
