Course aims
The course aims to introduce the theory of African-American music and to develop the skills of analysing jazz music. The course focuses on auditory training, mainly through listening and analysing harmonic sequences of jazz music.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students will have a comprehensive knowledge of jazz theory, harmony, articulation and rhythmics. They will be able to analytically listen and transcribe jazz compositions and to harmonise and reharmonise melodies in the musical language distinctive of the style of jazz.
