Course aims
Analysis of scores and associating them with material to be orchestrated. Issues faced by string orchestras and small symphony orchestras. The approximate number of passages to be orchestrated is 4.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students are required to:
- be able to analyse contemporary musical scores and highlight their most important aspects;
- be able to distinguish the role of orchestration from the perspective of the general structure of the work;
- know the potential of different instruments and instrument groups as well as their functions in a symphony orchestra;
- be familiar with the use of contemporary techniques in contemporary symphonic music. (For instance, the extended use of instruments, but also the different ways of notation.);
- be able to also use these in their practical work.
