Course aims
The preliminary task of the course is to give every student a possibility to realize how knowledge about the history of music can contribute to their career as musicians. The intention of the course is to provide the student with relevant tutoring and supervision to use knowledge about music history in his/her professional development. To achieve that goal the following basic topics are introduced and discussed: (1) different possibilities in understanding and studying music history; (2) various studying methods and materials; (3) the traditional framework of stylistic periods of Western art music; (4) the birth of Western art music – early notation and Gregorian chant (9.–10. cent.); (5) the birth of polyphony in the Western art music – organum and motet (10.–13. cent.); (6) evolution of polyphony until the end of the 16. Century.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student:
(1) should be able to demonstrate awareness about different approaches to music history and describe limits of these approaches;
(2) should be able to demonstrate knowledge of main bodies and usage of material (books, recordings, databases) that are available for acquiring information about different aspects of music history;
(3) should know well the traditional framework of stylistic periods of Western music and be able to explain the main features of these periods;
(4) should be able to explain the foundations of Western professional art music and early developments of polyphony;
(5) will have improved in expressing his/her opinions about music history in both oral and written manner.
