Course aims
The preliminary task of the course is to give every student a possibility to realize how knowledge about the history of music can contribute to his/her career as musicians. The intention of the course is to provide the student with relevant tutoring and supervision to use knowledge about music history in his/her professional development. To achieve that goal the following basic topics are introduced and discussed: (1) general characteristics of the baroque and the classical era; (2) music in Protestant Germany, with special emphasis on the life and musical works of Johann Sebastian Bach; (3) changes of musical institutions in the 18th century; the works of Georg Friedrich Händel; (4) transition from the Baroque era to the Classical era; (5) Viennese classics.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
(1) demonstrate good knowledge about general characteristics of the baroque and the classical era;
(2) describe the characteristic features of German Baroque music;
(3) describe the major currents of 18th century musical life;
(4) discuss the main genres and composers of the 18th century;
(5) discuss the musical foundations of the Viennese Classical school and the most important works of its composers;
(6) will have improved in expressing his/her opinions about music history in both oral and written manner.
