Course aims

This course aims to introduce to the students the creative, cultural and socio-political context surrounding the music written for and performed by the small ensembles from the seventeenth century until the present day.


Learning outcomes

The students who have passed the course will be expected to:
1. Significantly increase their awareness of the styles, genres, media, and traditions that permeate the history of Western Art Music;
2. Understand how various performance practices relate to societies in which they originate;
3. Effectively synthesise historical context with practical performing experience;
4. Develop their written and oral communication skills in the styles appropriate for various types of readers and listeners;
5. Enhance their ability to critically evaluate primary and secondary sources crucial for their future musical careers.
