Course aims
The aim of this subject is to introduce the main musical forms from the Baroque era to the 20th century and to develop practical analytical skills of the student.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, the student will be able to
- Characterize and differentiate the standard musical forms of the 18th and 19th centuries;
- Recognize these forms in practice, including in his/her own repertoire;
- Describe the tonal organization of the tonal composition and find out its cadences;
- Describe the phrase structure of the piece;
- Divide the large-scale forms into sections and define the function of each section (main theme, transition, subordinate theme etc)
- Notice the most important thematic connections and characterise the thematic process;
- Differentiate the conventional techniques from the specific features of the piece;
- Express the result of the analysis in a cohesive and logical manner both in a oral and written form.
