Course aims
The subject aims at introducing the student to the realization of figured bass in the performance of Renaissance and Boroque music. Figurations and and voice leading are discussed, and stylistic features of various traditions analyzed and practised. Developing ensemble skills of the student is also an essential component.
Learning outcomes
The student will:
- be able to perform a basso continuo accompaniment in an artistically convincing and technically fluent way,
- know all important accompaniment styles and their means of expression,
- be able to play accompaniments with a varying number of voices,
- be able to use imitation and improvisation in accompaniment,
- be able to follow, consider and support the soloist’s aspirations.
