Course aims
Students will accompany baroque works from figured bass, developing skills to freely dictate the form of the accompaniment as well as the ability to imaginatively, and in a manner that is musically responsive and considerate of soloists, accompany performers using figured bass inversions. The student will play baroque works with an advanced difficulty level, refining accompaniment in the imitative and improvisational style.
Learning outcomes
A master’s student will:
- be able to perform a basso continuo accompaniment in an artistically convincing and technically fluent way,
- know all important accompaniment styles and their means of expression,
- be able to play accompaniments with a varying number of voices,
- be able to use imitation and improvisation in accompaniment,
- be able to follow, consider and support the soloist’s aspirations.
In the field of Early Music:
The master's student
- is able to provide simple basso continuo accompaniment;
- is familiar with the major accompaniment styles;
- can analyze the harmony of their field's repertoire.
