Curriculum objectives
The goal of doctoral studies is to develop a student who has completed a master's degree into an independent researcher or creative artist with research skills at an advanced level who is able to continue his/her artistic and academic activities after obtaining a doctoral degree. He/she will be able to participate in a wide range of international post-doctoral programmes and apply for fellowships to work in the leading world centres of academic and artistic research.
Learning outcomes of the curriculum
A student who has successfully defended his/her doctoral thesis and obtained a doctoral degree:
1. is able independently to plan academic or artistic research projects, identify potential problems and find the methods and materials necessary to solve them; in artistic fields, to plan and perform innovative creative works of high artistic value, and to independently analyse and critically evaluate important and relevant issues for the development of their field of specialisation;
2. is able to supervise students’ research and, according to their field of specialisation, their artistic work; is familiar with the principles of the organisation and funding of research life in Estonia;
3. has broad knowledge and a systematic overview of his/her field in general and up-to-date knowledge in his/her specific field of research or artistic field;
4. is able to act autonomously in an international work and study environment and to participate in projects that require leadership and teamwork skills, innovative thinking, the application of digital competences and the ability to make strategic decisions;
5. understands the social role of his/her research and creative activities and is able to analyse and respond to social norms and relationships and, where necessary, to act to change them; is familiar with the principles of academic ethics;
is able to communicate the new knowledge generated by his/her activities to the wider society;
6. is able to publish the results of his/her research in internationally peer-reviewed musicological or artistic research publications or in related academic journals;
7. is able to develop international academic or artistic cooperation and to participate in and/or perform at relevant high-level events.

Short description of the curriculum
The curriculum has two paths:
1. musicology path
2. artistic research path in the field of music or theatre
Depending on the pathway, the curriculum consists of an academic doctoral thesis and doctoral studies or an artistic research project and doctoral studies.
The curriculum is divided into the following modules:
A Doctoral thesis or artistic research project 180 ECTS
B Core studies in support of the doctoral thesis or artistic research project 30 ECTS
C Additional studies and practical experience required to achieve the learning outcomes of doctoral studies 30 ECTS.

Depending on the pathway, the curriculum consists of an academic doctoral thesis and doctoral studies or an artistic research project and doctoral studies.

[DA05] Doctoral Thesis in Musicology 180 ECTS (to the field of musicology)
Objective of the module: The goal of writing a doctoral thesis is to refine the knowledge and skills necessary for musicological research and to create new knowledge.
The module is designed to achieve learning outcomes 1, 3 and 7 of the curriculum.
A musicologist who has successfully defended his/her doctoral thesis and obtained a doctoral degree:
1. is able to initiate, plan, implement and critically evaluate research and development activities that lead to new knowledge and new approaches in the study of music;
2. is able to present, both orally and in writing, the problems, conclusions and underlying theories relating to musicology in general and to his/her specific field of research, both to a specialist audience and when communicating with non-specialists, also in a foreign language that is relevant to his/her specific field;
3. has published original research articles in academic journals;
4. has a broad knowledge and a systematic overview of his/her field of research and is able to determine his/her needs for new knowledge or skills.

Objective of the module: The goal of the doctoral project in artistic research is to refine the skills and knowledge necessary for professional activities and to develop new knowledge and means of creative expression.
The module is designed to achieve learning outcomes 1, 3 and 7 of the curriculum.
A creative artist who has successfully defended his/her doctoral project in artistic research:
1. is able to initiate, plan and carry to conclusion independent creative works that can compete in an international context;
2. is able to discuss professional problems, both orally and in writing, with reference to the appropriate theoretical basis;
3. is able to analyse and reflect on his/her own artistic activity;
4. is able to determine his/her needs for new skills or knowledge and develop them creatively and artistically.
The module is designed to achieve learning outcomes 1, 3 and 7 of the curriculum.
A creative artist who has successfully defended his/her doctoral project in artistic research:

[DB05] Supporting Basic Studies for Doctoral Theses or Creative Research Doctoral Projects 30 ECTS: Choose either DOK761 or DOK783 according to the field
Objective of the module: The aim of the module is to develop and deepen the doctoral student's professional knowledge and skills and to prepare him/her for independent activities in international academic life, artistic research and creative activities. The module is designed to achieve the general learning outcomes 1, 2 and 4 of the curriculum.
Upon successful completion of the module, the Doctoral student:
1. possesses a high level of professional skills and is able to develop them independently;
2. is familiar with the methodology of academic and artistic research and is capable of critical reflection;
3. understands the meaning and scope of both field-specific and interdisciplinary knowledge and research methods and is able to apply them and, where necessary, to extend or reassess them;
4. is able to demonstrate sufficient analytical and synthesizing abilities to solve the academic, artistic or pedagogical tasks that present themselves on the basis of the resources available;
5. is oriented towards the ethics and philosophical issues of academic and artistic research;
6. is aware of the specific features of the learning processes of adult learners and the possibilities of influencing these processes; values lifelong learning;
7. possesses a high level of ability to supervise students' research or studies and artistic activities in creative fields.
Upon successful completion of the module, the Doctoral student:

Objective of the module: The goal of the module is to improve the doctoral student's knowledge and practical skills, taking into account his/her individual needs, in order to ensure the achievement of all the learning outcomes of the curriculum. The module is designed to achieve learning outcomes 1, 4, 6 and 7 of the curriculum.
Upon successful completion of the module, the doctoral student:
1. has experience in participating in research and creative work at the university and in his/her field in general;
2. has given at least one oral presentation at an international conference in his/her field;
3. has organised academic or artistic events or events designed to popularise his/her field of study;
4. is able to prepare research and creative projects;
5. is proficient in Estonian and English, and is able to edit both popular and specialist academic texts in at least one of these languages;
6. is able to supervise written (artistic) research papers and has completed at least 30 hours of teaching practice at a higher education institution;
7. has experience of popularizing academic and artistic works and is able to communicate his/her academic and artistic ideas to society.
